Introduction to Medieval Chant

page from medieval manuscriptTravel one thousand years back in time to the musical world of the medieval monastery! This participatory class will introduce the practice of medieval chant (known today as Gregorian Chant) through musical immersion. Participants will learn to read chant notation, recognize the medieval church modes, and express melodies using the Guidonion hand, all while becoming familiar with a variety of chant repertoire. This course is intended for amateur singers. Knowledge of musical notation is helpful, but not necessary.
